When any of these DTCs are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. The ECM turns off the heated oxygen sensor heater in fail-safe mode. Fail-safe mode continues until the power switch is turned off.
The heated oxygen sensor heater circuit uses a relay on the +B side of the circuit.

The sensing portion of the heated oxygen sensor has a zirconia element which is used to detect the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. If the zirconia element is at the appropriate temperature, and the difference between the oxygen concentrations surrounding the inside and outside surfaces of the sensor is large, the zirconia element generates voltage. In order to increase the oxygen concentration detecting capacity of the zirconia element, the ECM supplements the heat from the exhaust with heat from a heating element inside the sensor.
The ECM monitors the current applied to the heated oxygen sensor heater to check the heater for malfunctions.
If the heater current is outside the normal range, the signal transmitted by the heated oxygen sensor becomes inaccurate. When the current in the heated oxygen sensor heater is outside the normal operating range, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor heater and stores a DTC.
After the accumulated heater on time exceeds 100 or 250 seconds, the ECM calculates the heater resistance using auxiliary battery voltage and the current applied to the heater. If the resistance is above the threshold value, the ECM determines that there is a malfunction in the heated oxygen sensor heater and stores DTC P014118.

After repair has been completed, clear the DTC and then check that the vehicle has returned to normal by performing the following All Readiness check procedure.
When clearing the permanent DTCs, refer to the "CLEAR PERMANENT DTC" procedure.
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the power switch on (IG).
Turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).
Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
Turn the power switch on (IG) [A].
Turn the GTS on.
Put the engine in Inspection Mode (Maintenance Mode).
Start the engine and idle it for 5 minutes or more [B].
With the vehicle stationary, depress the accelerator pedal and maintain an engine speed of 2500 rpm for 1 minute [C].
During charge control, the engine speed is set at idle. Therefore, the engine speed will not increase when the accelerator pedal is depressed. In this case, perform steps [C] through [D] after charge control has completed.
Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [D].
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [E].
Read the pending DTCs.
If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
Input the DTC: P003612, P003614, P014118 or P102A9E.
Check the DTC judgment result.

If the judgment result is ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
If the judgment result is INCOMPLETE, perform steps [B] through [E] again.
[A] to [E]: Normal judgment procedure.
The normal judgment procedure is used to complete DTC judgment and also used when clearing permanent DTCs.
When clearing the permanent DTCs, do not disconnect the cable from the auxiliary battery terminal or attempt to clear the DTCs during this procedure, as doing so will clear the universal trip and normal judgment histories.

Vehicle Control History may be stored in the hybrid vehicle control ECU assembly if the engine is malfunctioning. Certain vehicle condition information is recorded when Vehicle Control History is stored. Reading the vehicle conditions recorded in both the Freeze Frame Data and Vehicle Control History can be useful for troubleshooting.

If any "Engine Malfunction" Vehicle Control History item has been stored in the hybrid vehicle control ECU assembly, make sure to clear it. However, as all Vehicle Control History items are cleared simultaneously, if any Vehicle Control History items other than "Engine Malfunction" are stored, make sure to perform any troubleshooting for them before clearing Vehicle Control History.
Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following procedure.
The operation of the heated oxygen sensor heater can be checked by referring to the Data List items O2 Sensor Heater B1S2 and O2 Sensor Heater Current Value B1S2.
Sensor 1 refers to the sensor closest to the engine assembly.
Sensor 2 refers to the sensor farthest away from the engine assembly.
When the value of the Data List item O2 Sensor Heater Current Value B1S2 is not 0 A, the heater is on.
Change the fuel injection volume using the Active Test [Control the Injection Volume for A/F Sensor] and monitor the heated oxygen sensor output voltage (Click hereEngine / Hybrid System>8ZR-FXE (ENGINE CONTROL)>SFI SYSTEM>P013611202304,999999,_51,_080778,_0393982,RM100000002BFDX,P013611). If the sensor output voltage does not change (almost no reaction) while performing the Active Test, the sensor may be malfunctioning.
Read Freeze Frame Data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as Freeze Frame Data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, Freeze Frame Data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
Inspect the heated oxygen sensor.
Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the heated oxygen sensor.
