The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft position sensor plate and a pickup coil.
The crankshaft position sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed to the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The crankshaft position sensor plate rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per crankshaft revolution. Based on these signals, the ECM calculates the crankshaft position and engine speed. Using these calculations, the fuel injection and ignition timing are controlled.

When the engine is being stopped or started automatically by stop and start system control, the ECM does not monitor the crankshaft position sensor signal.
A DTC will be stored if any of the following occur:
The crankshaft position sensor signal (NE signal) is not received by the ECM when the engine is being cranked.
The engine stalls and the engine speed signal value decreases rapidly (under normal conditions the engine speed will decrease gradually).
After repairs have been completed, clear the DTCs and then check that the vehicle has returned to normal by performing the following All Readiness check procedure.
When clearing the permanent DTCs, refer to the Clear Permanent DTC procedure.
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).
Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 2 minutes or more.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.
Start the engine and wait for 5 seconds or more. [*1]

The normal judgment procedure is used to complete DTC judgment and also used when clearing permanent DTCs.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Transmission / Utility / All Readiness.
Input the DTC: P03352A or P033531.
Check the DTC judgment result.

If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform the normal judgment procedure again.
Refer to SFI system DTC P033511.
Perform the universal trip to clear permanent DTCs.
Perform initialization when parts related to the continuously variable transaxle system are replaced.
Check that no DTCs are stored after performing initialization.
If no problem is found by this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, check for problems by referring to the engine mechanical section.
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
DATA LIST
The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine running normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the GTS on.
Start the engine.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Transmission / Data List / Engine Speed.
According to the display on the GTS, read the Data List.
