The ECM monitors the status of the GPF using 2 exhaust temperature sensors, installed to the inlet and outlet.
The No. 1 exhaust gas temperature sensor sends a signal of the GPF upstream exhaust temperature to the ECM.
The No. 2 exhaust gas temperature sensor sends a signal of the GPF downstream exhaust temperature to the ECM.
The ECM detects loss of function of the GPF by converting the temperature change into an area after monitoring the exhaust temperature upstream and downstream of the GPF from the time the engine is started until the exhaust temperature downstream of the GPF reaches 80°C or more after 5 hours or more have passed since the last engine shutdown. When the minimum intake air temperature during monitoring is 10°C (50°F) and the value obtained by dividing the GPF upstream exhaust temperature area by the GPF downstream exhaust temperature area is less than 2.3, the ECM determines loss of function of the GPF and illuminates the MIL and stores a DTC.
After repair has been completed, clear the DTC and then check that the vehicle has returned to normal by performing the following procedure.
When clearing the permanent DTCs, refer to the "CLEAR PERMANENT DTC" procedure.
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).
Turn the ignition switch off.
With the engine stopped, leave the vehicle as is for 8 hours or more.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the GTS on.
Idle the engine for 15 minutes or more.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
Read the pending DTCs.
If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
Read Freeze Frame Data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as Freeze Frame Data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, Freeze Frame Data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
Read the DTCs.

Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or higher with all the accessories switched off.

With the engine warmed up, idle the engine for 5 minutes or more.
While the vehicle is stopped, check the value of the Data List items "Exhaust Temperature B1S1" and "Exhaust Temperature B1S2", and race the engine at 2500 rpm for 60 seconds.
