PROCEDURE

Hide 1.INSPECT BRAKE DRUM INSIDE DIAMETER

Using a vernier caliper, measure the inside diameter of the brake drum.

Standard Inside Diameter:

254.0 mm (10.00 in.)


Maximum Inside Diameter:

256.0 mm (10.079 in.)


HINT:

If the inside diameter is more than the maximum, replace the brake drum.



Hide 2.INSPECT REAR BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS

Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the rear brake shoe lining.

Standard Thickness:

5.0 mm (0.197 in.)


Minimum Thickness:

1.0 mm (0.0394 in.)


NOTICE:

Always replace both the right and left brake shoes together.


HINT:

If the lining thickness is less than the minimum, or if there is severe or uneven wear, replace the brake shoe.



Hide 3.INSPECT BRAKE DRUM AND DRUM BRAKE SHOE LINING FOR PROPER CONTACT

Apply chalk to the inside surface of the brake drum, then slide the brake shoe against the brake drum to check the fit of the rear brake shoe lining to the brake drum.

HINT:

If the contact between the brake drum and the rear brake shoe lining is improper, repair it using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe.



Hide 4.INSPECT BRAKE CYLINDER AND PISTON

Check the rear wheel brake cylinder bore and wheel cylinder piston for rust and scoring.

HINT:

If necessary, replace the rear wheel brake cylinder assembly or wheel cylinder piston.
